The Zeigarnik effect
It’s 2 a.m. and you are suddenly certain you never sent the form back. You are not going to send it now. Your mind brings it up anyway — then again in the shower, then again mid-meeting. There is a famous piece of psychology behind that feeling, and it is more interesting than the popular version.

The story starts in a Berlin restaurant in the 1920s, with the psychologist Kurt Lewin and a table of colleagues. The waiter reeled off what everyone owed without a single note. Half an hour after the bill was settled, Lewin asked him to do it again — and the waiter had nothing left. Even this much is told two ways: Edwin Boring has the waiter memorising the total, while Donald MacKinnon, who was at the table, remembered him reciting each person’s order.

That is an anecdote, not evidence, and it was Lewin’s anecdote rather than Bluma Zeigarnik’s. Her contribution was to test it. As a doctoral student in his Berlin group she gave 32 adults 22 short tasks — winding thread, folding paper, multiplying numbers, drawing a vase. Half were allowed to finish. The other half she interrupted at the moment the person was most absorbed, handing over the next task: “Now do this, please.” Afterwards she asked, without warning, which tasks they could remember. Interrupted ones came back roughly twice as often, across four experiments. She published in 1927.
What the effect claims.
Lewin’s explanation was that deciding to do something creates a kind of tension that stays switched on until the thing is done. Finish the task and the tension discharges. Get interrupted and it keeps running in the background, which is why the unfinished item stays closer to hand. In the productivity books this became “open loops”: every commitment you have made and not closed is a small process still drawing power.
The honest part: it does not reliably replicate.
This is where most articles stop. Later researchers had trouble reproducing the memory advantage. By 1964 a review could say the effect was far from the invariable result, and that plenty of studies recalled the completed tasks better. Annie van Bergen set out to replicate it precisely, ran seven experiments, found the pattern in none of them, and in 1968 argued the question should be dropped.
A 2025 meta-analysis by Romain Ghibellini and Beat Meier pooled the accumulated studies and reached the same place: no memory advantage for unfinished tasks. It did find something else, though. The careful version is narrower. That an unfinished task is easier to remember is not established. That it keeps tugging at you is much better supported, and it is the half you can feel at 2 a.m., when you are not lying awake pleased about how well you recall the form.
You don’t have to finish it. You have to plan it.
The most useful modern finding here comes from E. J. Masicampo and Roy Baumeister in 2011. They had students write about two important errands they had not yet started, then read the opening chapters of a novel. Those students’ minds wandered back to the errands as they read, and their comprehension suffered for it.
One group got an extra instruction first: write down exactly how, when, and where you will do each errand. They finished nothing. But the interruptions dropped to the level of students who had written about tasks already finished — and the effect was strongest in the people who went on to carry the plans out. “How, when, and where” is not a new idea to anyone who has read David Allen’s Getting Things Done. It is most of the method, written as a habit rather than an experiment.

You turn every captured note into a physical next action. Not “taxes” but “find last year’s return in the filing box”. That is the sentence that replaces the vague worry.

Contexts and dates supply the “when and where”
An action tagged for the phone, the errands run, or a specific date has an occasion attached to it. You are no longer holding the question of when.
